Barcelona Star’s Family Forced to Consider Relocation Amid Rising Tensions in Mataró

Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal’s family has been forced to consider relocating after his father, Mounir Nasraoui, was stabbed in their local neighborhood of Rocafonda in Mataró, a town 45 minutes north of Barcelona. The shocking incident occurred just days before the start of the season, putting the family under immense strain.

Lamine Yamal’s grandmother, Fatima, revealed in an interview with Espejo Público, as reported by Sport, that she has also received threats, exacerbating their fears for safety. “With this Mounir [incident], I can’t eat. My stomach is closed from shock, from the fright. I can’t even eat or anything,” Fatima shared, adding that she plans to move to Barcelona with her son.

Fatima suggested that growing jealousy towards the family might be behind the threats and violence. “The other day, the people who attacked Mounir told me that there is something for me too. If they want to kill me, I’m here, sitting in the square,” she recounted.

The situation has cast a shadow over the promising career of 17-year-old Lamine Yamal, who recently played a key role in helping Spain secure victory in the Euro 2024 qualifiers. Despite criticism from some right-wing commentators in Spain questioning his commitment to the national team due to his wearing of flags from his family’s origins—Guinea and Morocco—Fatima was adamant that her grandson is fully dedicated to Spain. “He was born here, he studied here, and this child is not from Morocco, do you understand me? My son has not forced him to do anything,” she clarified.

In response to the growing threats, Lamine Yamal has moved to Sant Joan Despí, close to Barcelona’s training ground, where he now resides with his cousin. Although he frequently returns to Rocafonda and recently invited friends for a kickabout at the club’s training ground, the safety of his family remains a pressing concern.

It is unclear what steps law enforcement will take in response to the incident and the threats against the family. As the young football star continues to make strides in his career, the security of his loved ones hangs in the balance.
