Liverpool Eyes Real Madrid Star as Potential Salah Replacement in January

Liverpool FC is reportedly considering Real Madrid’s Rodrygo as a potential replacement for star forward Mohamed Salah, should the Egyptian international leave the club in January. This follows reports of substantial offers from Saudi Pro League side Al Ittihad for Salah during the summer transfer window.

Al Ittihad’s bids, including a staggering £150 million offer, were firmly rejected by Liverpool, and Salah has since demonstrated his worth by contributing two goals and four assists in just five Premier League matches at the start of the 2023-2024 season.

With renewed speculation suggesting that Al Ittihad could return with another offer for Salah in January, Liverpool is said to be exploring alternative options. According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, the Premier League giants have shown interest in securing the services of Real Madrid winger Rodrygo as a potential replacement for Salah.

While Liverpool’s interest in the Brazilian talent is apparent, it is reported that Real Madrid may only entertain the possibility of parting ways with Rodrygo if an ‘exceptional’ offer is presented by Liverpool.

Rodrygo, 22, has garnered considerable attention in the football world for his performances with Real Madrid, having netted 32 goals in 171 appearances for the club. He is widely regarded as one of the most promising young talents in global football.

In terms of market valuation, the CIES Football Observatory has estimated Rodrygo’s transfer worth at €200 million (£173 million), making him the fourth most valuable player globally, trailing behind his Real Madrid teammates Vinicius Jr and Jude Bellingham, as well as Manchester City striker Erling Haaland.

Interestingly, Liverpool had an opportunity to secure Rodrygo’s signature for a mere €3 million (£2.6 million) back in 2017, a year before Real Madrid eventually acquired him from Santos.

The Guardian has reported that the decision to forgo the chance to sign Rodrygo in 2017 was influenced by former Brazil and Manchester City midfielder Elano, who was then working as an assistant coach at Santos. At that time, a 16-year-old Rodrygo had yet to make his first-team debut for the Brazilian club.

Liverpool’s unsuccessful bid paved the way for Real Madrid to secure Rodrygo for €45 million (£39 million) the following year, and it remains to be seen if Jurgen Klopp’s side can entice Real Madrid to part with their promising winger with a considerably higher offer in the upcoming January transfer market.
