Liverpool Manager Arne Slot Charged by FA After Post-Match Red Card in Everton Clash

Slot and assistant Sipke Hulshoff face formal charges following heated Merseyside derby; both clubs also cited for failing to control behavior.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has been formally charged by the Football Association (FA) following his dismissal after Wednesday’s intense 2-2 draw with Everton. The Dutchman, along with his assistant Sipke Hulshoff, were shown red cards by referee Michael Oliver in the aftermath of a fiery post-match incident that has now sparked an FA investigation.

The charges stem from allegations that Slot and Hulshoff acted in an “improper manner” and used “insulting and/or abusive words or behavior” toward match officials after the final whistle. The FA’s statement also accused Hulshoff of continuing his misconduct even after being sent off.

Adding to the drama, both Liverpool and Everton have been charged for failing to ensure their players and staff behaved appropriately in the chaotic moments following the match. The FA cited a lack of control over “improper and/or provocative” actions from individuals in the technical area.

The incident has left fans and pundits puzzled, especially after the Premier League initially posted—and then quickly deleted—a statement on its website claiming Slot would receive a two-match touchline ban. According to The Athletic’s James Pearce, the announcement was a “mistake,” leaving the situation unclear until the FA’s official charges were revealed.

Slot addressed the incident during his pre-match press conference on Friday, admitting that emotions got the better of him. “There is an ongoing process, and we have to respect that, so I can’t go into details,” he said. “What happened was the extra time—additional five minutes—ended up being eight. The emotions got the better of me. If I could do that differently… I am hoping to do it differently next time as well.”

The Liverpool boss also pointed to several contentious moments during stoppage time, including a lengthy VAR review, as factors that heightened tensions. “Many things in extra time happened which led to me being quite emotional,” he explained. “There was a VAR incident for two minutes, where I thought it may be a foul and then it could be offside. Many things happened—it wouldn’t be smart to go into every incident.”

Despite the charges, Slot will be on the touchline for Liverpool’s upcoming Premier League clash against Wolves at Anfield on Sunday. Both Slot and Hulshoff, as well as Liverpool and Everton, have until Wednesday, February 19, to respond to the FA’s charges.

The incident underscores the high stakes and raw emotions of the Merseyside derby, a fixture known for its intensity both on and off the pitch. As the FA’s investigation unfolds, the spotlight remains on Slot and his team, who must now navigate the fallout while maintaining their focus on the season ahead.
