Manchester City Fined £2.09 Million by Premier League for Kick-Off Delays

Separate from Ongoing FFP Allegations, Club Penalized for 22 Breaches Over Two Seasons

Manchester City has been fined £2.09 million by the Premier League for 22 breaches related to kick-off delays over two seasons. This sanction is separate from the club’s ongoing legal battle over 115 alleged breaches of financial rules.

The breaches, spanning the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons, involve delays in both match start times and restarts following the 15-minute half-time interval. The Premier League confirmed the fine in a statement, emphasizing the importance of maintaining professional standards and ensuring the global broadcast schedule of all 380 league matches remains on track.

The Premier League’s statement read: “The Premier League and Manchester City FC have entered into a sanction agreement after the club accepted it had breached Premier League Rule L.33 relating to kick-off and re-start obligations. The breaches relate to a number of Premier League matches during the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons. Rules relating to kick-offs and re-starts help ensure the organisation of the competition is set at the highest possible professional standard and provides certainty to fans and participating clubs. It also ensures the broadcast of all 380 League matches around the world is kept to schedule. As required by the Premier League Rules, the sanction agreement has been ratified by three members of the Independent Judicial Panel.”

Manchester City responded to the sanction, stating: “The club has apologised and reminded its players and management teams of their responsibilities.”

This development adds to the ongoing tension between Manchester City and the Premier League, as the defending English champions continue to face accusations of financial misconduct.
