PSG Set Price for Uruguay Midfielder Amid Transfer Interest
Manchester United face tough competition from Liverpool for the signing of Manuel Ugarte, with PSG setting a price for the Uruguay midfielder. Ugarte’s agent has revealed that Liverpool is also interested in his client, adding pressure on United to secure the deal.
United are looking to make significant moves in the transfer market this summer under the new sporting control of Sir Jim Ratcliffe. They aim to bring in at least four new players to strengthen their squad. However, with the Premier League’s strict Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations, United need to be cautious with their spending.
To manage costs, United have allowed Raphael Varane and Anthony Martial to leave at the end of their contracts, saving £590,000 a week in wages. If Casemiro also departs, the club will save an additional £43.68 million a year. The savings will be reinvested to sign new players, including a center-half, midfielder, striker, and possibly a right-sided attacker.
United’s top target for a central defender is Jarrad Branthwaite from Everton, and there is optimism that a deal can be reached. However, their most immediate focus has been on signing Ugarte from PSG. The 23-year-old midfielder joined PSG last summer for €60 million (£51 million) from Sporting Lisbon and made 37 appearances across all competitions.
Reports suggest that PSG coach Luis Enrique has been disappointed with Ugarte and is willing to let him go. United made an initial offer of €35 million (£29.7 million), which PSG rejected. Despite this, United remain hopeful of reaching a compromise, with a deal around €50 million (£42.3 million) being possible. Ugarte is seen as an ideal midfield partner for Kobbie Mainoo.
However, Liverpool have now entered the race for Ugarte. New Anfield boss Arne Slot has identified the need to replace Fabinho in defensive midfield and sees Ugarte as a strong candidate. Ugarte’s agent, Jorge Chijane, has confirmed Liverpool’s interest, stating that several clubs are in the mix and that a move is almost certain this summer.
Ugarte, contracted to PSG until 2028 and earning €10 million a year, is currently on Copa America duty. With both Manchester United and Liverpool vying for his signature, the transfer battle is set to heat up in the coming weeks.
