Manchester United Eyeing Double Midfield Reinforcements Amid Uncertainty Over Ten Hag’s Future

Frenkie de Jong and Richard Rios targeted as potential additions, with Casemiro’s replacement under consideration.

Manchester United are reportedly planning to strengthen their midfield with two key signings, including long-term target Frenkie de Jong and a possible replacement for veteran Casemiro. As doubts linger over manager Erik ten Hag’s future, recruitment efforts are continuing, with major changes expected in the squad.

According to reports from Spain, United are once again favorites to sign Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong next summer, should the Catalan giants decide to part ways with the Dutch midfielder.

Frenkie de Jong

De Jong, who has been linked with United since 2022, is reportedly unwilling to renew his contract, which runs until 2026. The club’s ongoing financial issues could force them into selling the 27-year-old, with Manchester United seen as the leading contenders for his signature.

De Jong’s reluctance to leave Barcelona in the past has not deterred United’s interest, and a move could be finalized if Barcelona opts to cash in on him to alleviate their financial concerns. The midfielder has previously deferred wages to support the club during the pandemic, but it is believed he is not inclined to accept a lower salary in any new deal.

In addition to De Jong, United are also monitoring Palmeiras star Richard Rios as a potential successor to Casemiro.

Richard Rios

The Brazilian midfielder, who has shone for Colombia, has been on United’s radar since the summer, and while they initially opted for Manuel Ugarte from PSG, interest in Rios has resurfaced. FIFA agent Sabatino Durante recently confirmed United’s interest, which led Palmeiras to increase their asking price, forcing Fiorentina to walk away from a deal.

Palmeiras are reportedly unwilling to sell Rios before the expanded Club World Cup, but United could reignite their pursuit in 2025 as they look to phase out Casemiro and Christian Eriksen. Both players, now in their 30s, have shown signs of decline, and United are preparing for life without them. Casemiro, whose contract runs until 2026, could be headed for a move to the Saudi Pro League, while Eriksen, whose deal expires at the end of the season, may be released.

The potential midfield overhaul reflects the club’s desire to build a younger, more dynamic squad, with Mason Mount also needing to prove his worth after a difficult debut season following his £55 million transfer from Chelsea.

Meanwhile, United are also rumored to be in the race for Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies, as they continue to plan for the future despite the uncertainty surrounding Ten Hag’s position.
