Jonny Evans Doubtful as United’s Defensive Woes Deepen Before Europa League Tie
Manchester United’s injury crisis has worsened ahead of their Europa League clash against Fenerbahce, with veteran defender Jonny Evans missing training due to a knock. After ending a five-game winless streak with a comeback victory over Brentford, United now head to Istanbul to face José Mourinho’s side, but Evans’ absence adds to manager Erik ten Hag’s mounting concerns at the back.
Evans, who has played a pivotal role in United’s defense recently, starting the last two matches, was notably absent from Wednesday’s training session, leaving him doubtful for the European encounter. His absence compounds United’s defensive challenges, with the team already struggling to field a stable backline amid injuries.
In the Brentford match, Evans partnered Matthijs de Ligt, who sustained a head injury, in central defense, while Lisandro Martinez filled in at left-back. If Evans is ruled out, Martinez may return to center-back, with Noussair Mazraoui stepping in at full-back after his recovery from a recent heart procedure.
Victor Lindelof is also an option for Ten Hag, though he has largely been on the fringes of the squad this season. Meanwhile, captain Bruno Fernandes has been given a break from training as he is suspended for the Fenerbahce fixture.
In more positive news, summer signing Leny Yoro is making progress in his recovery. The 18-year-old defender, who joined United from Lille in a £52 million move, has resumed individual training after undergoing surgery for a metatarsal injury suffered during pre-season. Yoro’s return to training offers a glimmer of hope for United’s defense as they look to secure their first European victory this season after draws against FC Twente and FC Porto.
