Real Madrid Eye January Move for Centre-Back as Manchester United Joins Race for Jonathan Tah

Ancelotti’s side seeks Militao replacement, with Manchester United also vying for Leverkusen’s Tah.

Real Madrid has prioritized signing a new centre-back in the upcoming January transfer window following Eder Militao’s season-ending ACL injury, according to reports from Spanish outlet AS. Carlo Ancelotti’s team is said to be evaluating multiple options, including Aymeric Laporte (Al-Nassr), Castello Lukeba (RB Leipzig), and Jonathan Tah (Bayer Leverkusen).

Tah, in particular, is attracting interest from multiple clubs. Manchester United, under new manager Ruben Amorim, reportedly initiated contact with Tah’s representatives as they seek defensive reinforcements to suit Amorim’s preference for a back three. However, Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg recently indicated that Real Madrid has also added Tah to their shortlist, potentially complicating United’s pursuit of the player.

Plettenberg noted that while no concrete negotiations have yet occurred between Real Madrid and Tah, a January transfer “could become a real possibility.” Despite speculation over a potential reunion with former captain Sergio Ramos to cover Militao’s absence, Real Madrid reportedly remains focused on securing a longer-term addition instead of a short-term solution.

Tah, 28, is in the final year of his contract with Bayer Leverkusen, which may push the club to consider a January sale at a reduced price. Real Madrid’s interest in Tah, combined with Manchester United’s potential need to bolster its center-back options next season, could set the stage for a competitive winter transfer pursuit.

Manchester United currently has several centre-backs, including Lisandro Martinez, Matthijs De Ligt, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Leny Yoro, and Jonny Evans. However, Maguire, Lindelof, and Evans are nearing the end of their contracts, leaving United with the option to reconfigure its defensive lineup. Signing Tah in January would allow United to prepare for potential exits and align with Amorim’s vision for the squad.
