Ten Hag’s Side Shows Defensive Improvement Amid Ongoing Struggles

Manchester United managed to secure a 0-0 draw against Aston Villa this afternoon, halting their recent defensive lapses but extending their winless streak to five matches. Despite remaining 14th in the Premier League table, the solid defensive display at Villa Park may have bought embattled manager Erik ten Hag some time, as the Ineos group considers his future.

Bruno Fernandes came closest to breaking the deadlock with a second-half free-kick that rattled the crossbar, but neither side posed a serious threat to score. United’s attack, however, remained uninspired, continuing their struggles with only five goals in seven league games. The lack of creativity up front persisted as Ten Hag’s forwards looked devoid of ideas.

Although the result wasn’t the decisive loss some had predicted would seal Ten Hag’s fate, it wasn’t a breakthrough performance either. The Dutchman’s future remains uncertain, but the improved defensive showing could give Ineos less reason to make an immediate change.

Jonny Evans, whose inclusion in the starting line-up dominated pre-match discussions, once again proved reliable. The 36-year-old veteran brought crucial experience and leadership to United’s backline, helping to steady the defence in his surprise return to the club last year.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Andre Onana’s passing remains inconsistent, but his overall form has improved. With another clean sheet today, he has now kept four in seven Premier League appearances, surpassing all other keepers this season.

Harry Maguire, who earned his starting spot after his heroics against Porto on Thursday, performed well alongside Evans. However, his day was cut short after picking up an injury before halftime. Maguire had to be helped off the field, and his status remains uncertain heading into the international break.

Despite the draw, Manchester United’s struggles in attack persist, and Ten Hag faces growing pressure to resolve the team’s issues before their next fixture.
