Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe assured fans he will stay at the club for at least one more year because his contract is still active, meaning there will be no offseason drama like in years past.
Mbappe, 24, received the Ligue 1 Player of the Year award and will stay in Paris. It is the fourth consecutive time that the striker wins the trophy. He revealed his future plans while delivering an acceptance speech.
“It is a pleasure to leave my name in the history of my country’s championship,” Mbappe said. “I am very happy for the renewal. Next year, I will play for Paris Saint-Germain. I still have a contract. I will fulfill my contract”
Mbappe beat out Seko Fofana (RC Lens), Jonathan David (LOSC), Lionel Messi (PSG) and Lois Openda (RC Lens) for the award. The first name he mentioned, however, teammate’s Sergio Rico, who fell off a horse and is in the hospital.
“It’s a pleasure, but I would like to reiterate that my thoughts are with Sergio Rico,” Mbappe said. “And also to our sporting director, who has suffered a sporting loss this week. I wanted to have a sense of priorities. I would also like to congratulate all the Lens players, who have had a magnificent season. Also to Jonathan David, who helped his team.”
Mbappe could be released in 2024
Mbappe also thanked Messi, who will leave the club this off-season after not renewing his contract.
“Of course, I thank Leo (Messi), who has helped me a lot. It’s a privilege to play for Paris Saint-Germain with players like that,” Mbappe said. “But also the people behind the scenes who allow us to be in the best possible conditions. This record is a pleasure. I’ve always wanted to win and leave my name in the history of the championship. I never thought I would win so quickly.”
The striker did not clarify what will happen in June 2024, the deadline to execute the player-option year in the contract.
He will first see the outcome of the next project and decide if he’ll negotiate another extension. Mbappe will have the upper hand in contract talks.
