The Liverpool star responds to ongoing comments about his contract situation, fueling speculation about his future at Anfield.
Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has fired back at former club legend Jamie Carragher, accusing the pundit of being “obsessed” with him after repeated criticism over Salah’s handling of his contract situation.
Carragher’s Comments Spark Reaction
Carragher, speaking during the weekend, questioned Salah’s public remarks about the lack of progress on a new Liverpool deal, suggesting the Egyptian could learn from the conduct of teammate Virgil van Dijk.
“You know what I would say. Virgil van Dijk has come out of this whole situation this season as captain of the club in a higher esteem for me,” Carragher said. “He’s been a statesman, performing on the pitch and leading the team without getting involved in public discussions about contracts.”
Carragher implied Salah’s approach lacked the same discretion, contrasting it with van Dijk’s focus on performances and leadership.
Salah’s Response
Salah, known for his sharp performances on the pitch, took to Twitter to address Carragher directly, saying: “I’m starting to think you’re obsessed with me.”
Carragher, taking the comment in stride, responded with humor: “I’ve always been obsessed with you, @MoSalah. Hopefully, that obsession will continue next season.”
A Clouded Future at Anfield
Salah’s contract situation has been a point of contention for months, with the 32-year-old now in the final six months of his deal. Under FIFA rules, Salah is officially allowed to negotiate pre-contract agreements with clubs outside England, and reports of offers from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Saudi Pro League clubs have intensified speculation.
PSG is reportedly offering Salah a lucrative three-year deal worth €500,000 per week, far surpassing Liverpool’s two-year offer of €400,000 weekly. The Saudi Pro League is also expected to reignite its interest after making substantial offers in 2023.
Speaking to Sky Sports last Friday, Salah hinted that his time at Liverpool might be nearing an end. “It’s my last year at the club, and I want to do something special for the city. As things stand, there is no progress [on contract talks],” Salah said.
A Liverpool Legend’s Legacy
Since joining Liverpool from Roma in 2017 for a modest €38 million, Salah has cemented himself as one of the club’s all-time greats. With 232 goals in 376 appearances, he has played a pivotal role in delivering the Premier League and Champions League titles to Anfield.
This season, Salah continues to dominate, leading Liverpool’s charge at the top of the Premier League with 21 goals in 27 matches across all competitions. He tops the European Golden Shoe race and boasts more assists (13) than any player in Europe’s top five leagues.
As Liverpool fans anxiously watch the situation unfold, Salah’s future remains one of the biggest talking points of the transfer season. Will he remain a Red, or will he write a new chapter elsewhere? Only time will tell.
