Disagreement over contract length fuels uncertainty, with fans pointing fingers at the club hierarchy.
Liverpool’s negotiations with Mohamed Salah over a new contract have reached an impasse, intensifying scrutiny on the club’s hierarchy after the Egyptian forward revealed he has yet to receive an offer. Despite both parties expressing a desire to continue their partnership, significant disagreements remain unresolved, particularly regarding the length of the proposed deal.
Salah Seeks Security, Liverpool Remains Cautious
Salah, who has been a cornerstone of Liverpool’s success in recent years, believes his performances merit a three-year contract extension. At 32, the forward shows no signs of slowing down and seeks the security of a longer-term deal. However, Liverpool are cautious about committing to an expensive contract for an ageing player, mindful of the financial implications such a deal could carry.
While discussions are reportedly being conducted in a positive atmosphere, the gap between the two sides remains significant. Salah’s public comments have added urgency to the situation, with fans voicing frustration over the perceived lack of action from the club.
Fan Frustration Targets Sporting Director Richard Hughes
Much of the fan backlash has been directed at Liverpool’s sporting director, Richard Hughes, who assumed his role earlier this year. A subdued summer transfer window already left supporters dissatisfied, and the prolonged contract negotiations with Salah have further fueled criticism.
Dutch agent Rob Jansen, who negotiated with Hughes during the summer, attributed part of the impasse to the sporting director’s approach. Speaking on the Kieft Jansen Egmond Gijp podcast, Jansen described Hughes as “robotic” and lacking the empathy required to handle negotiations with a player like Salah.
“One thing Richard Hughes doesn’t have is any sense of empathy. Zero. He’s a robot,” Jansen said. “Especially with a player like Salah, who has emotion, a different culture, and is sensitive to warmth.”
A Ticking Clock for Resolution
As Salah’s current deal edges closer to its expiration, the stakes are rising. The forward remains a fan favorite and a key player in Liverpool’s ambitions, making the failure to secure his future a growing concern for supporters.
Liverpool’s challenge now lies in bridging the gap with Salah and avoiding what could become a damaging departure for both the player and the club. For fans, the clock is ticking—and so is their patience.
