Regulator Vows Action Amid Public Outcry Over Reality Show’s Alleged Code Violations
Nigeria’s broadcasting watchdog has broken its silence on growing complaints about Big Brother Naija Season 10, admitting concerns over the show’s “brazen” breach of national decency standards. The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) confirmed it is reviewing the program after a scathing petition accused it of corrupting public morals with explicit content.
“Blatant Violations” Spark Backlash
In a statement signed by Pauline Ehusani, NBC’s Director of Investigation and Enforcement, the Commission acknowledged receiving a formal complaint from human rights lawyer Maduabuchi Idam, who demanded either a ban or strict broadcasting restrictions for the reality show.
“The Commission is equally concerned with the brazen contravention of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code,” the statement read, referencing prohibitions against obscene material. The NBC warned it has the legal authority to sanction erring broadcasters under the National Broadcasting Commission Act.
Lawyer: “Why Ban Music Videos But Allow BBNaija?”
Idam’s petition accused the show of abandoning its entertainment value in favor of “unrestrained obscene displays,” arguing that just two weeks into the new season, it has already surpassed the indecency levels of previously banned music videos.
“If NBC could prohibit songs like Olamide’s Don’t Stop and Reminisce’s Tesojue for indecency, why is BBNaija getting a free pass?” he questioned. The lawyer gave regulators a 30-day ultimatum to either pull the show off-air or restrict it to adult-only channels.
NBC Urges Public to Flag “Inappropriate” Content
While the Commission deliberates, it has called on viewers to take matters into their own hands by reporting offensive BBNaija clips on social media. “If flagged enough, such content could be taken down permanently,” the statement advised—a move seen by critics as shifting responsibility to the public instead of enforcing its own rules.
With pressure mounting, the NBC faces a tough decision: crack down on one of Nigeria’s most-watched shows or risk accusations of hypocrisy in its content regulation. For now, millions of viewers—and outraged critics—are waiting to see if the Commission will finally draw the line.
