F*ing Rat” Scrawled on Defaced Artwork Amid Growing Transfer Tension**
A heartfelt mural celebrating Athletic Club star Nico Williams and his brother Iñaki has been viciously vandalized twice in a week, as furious fans lash out over the winger’s potential move to Barcelona.
The artwork in Barakaldo first came under attack last Sunday when hooded individuals erased Nico’s face and spray-painted a chilling message in Basque: “Whether you stay or go, you have lost respect.” After artist Carlos López and the club restored the mural, it was defaced again within 24 hours—this time with Nico’s image blacked out and the words “F**ing rat”* scrawled beside it.

The repeated attacks expose the bitter divide between Williams and sections of Athletic’s fanbase, with tensions boiling over as Barcelona push to sign the Spanish international. Club officials have also hardened their stance, refusing to negotiate what they view as a betrayal by their homegrown star.
But the hostility may be accelerating Williams’ exit. Reports suggest the 21-year-old has urged Barcelona to complete his transfer before Athletic’s July 9 pre-season return—a clear sign the deteriorating relationship could force an emotional departure.
As the mural lies in ruins, so too does the bond between player and club. With Barcelona waiting in the wings, Athletic’s tough love approach risks backfiring spectacularly.
