Barcelona, PSG, Chelsea, and Arsenal Among Suitors for the Coveted Spain International
Nico Williams has become one of the most sought-after players in the transfer market, with top clubs like Barcelona, PSG, Chelsea, and Arsenal expressing keen interest in the Spain international forward. While Barcelona has been leading the race, reportedly ready to meet his €58 million release clause, recent developments suggest Williams is likely to remain at Athletic Club for the 2024/25 season.
Reports from Spain have cast doubt on Williams’ willingness to move to Barcelona this summer. Daniel Sobis, a LaLiga correspondent in Poland, confirmed the news on Sunday via social media, stating: “Nico Williams will still be an Athletic player in the 2024/25 season.”
Barcelona-based sports publication Sport also questioned the likelihood of Williams’ transfer, suggesting he has promised his brother Inaki to stay with Athletic Club for another season in Europe. This commitment to his brother and club has seemingly influenced his decision to remain with the Basque side.
Barcelona’s ongoing financial issues may also be a significant factor in Williams’ choice to stay. Despite President Joan Laporta’s assertions that the club can afford the transfer, Arsenal believes otherwise. The Blaugrana’s financial constraints may prevent them from covering both Williams’ transfer fee and his substantial €10 million annual wages.
At just 22, Williams has time on his side and no pressing need to leave Athletic Club. This decision leaves the door open for other interested clubs like Arsenal, Chelsea, or PSG to potentially make a compelling offer. Barcelona, meanwhile, might have to wait until next season to make another attempt at securing the talented winger.
As the summer transfer window continues, Williams’ situation remains one to watch, with the possibility of late twists and turns. For now, though, it appears the Spanish star will continue to shine at Athletic Club.
