Online Watchdog Fires Back at Court Order Over Alleged Defamation of Gospel Singer Mercy Chinwo
Self-proclaimed Nigerian online activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has responded with defiance after a Chief Magistrate Court in Wuse Zone 6, Abuja, issued a bench warrant for his arrest over allegations of criminal defamation against gospel singer Mercy Chinwo. The court directed the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to arrest and produce VDM to face the charges after he failed to appear in court despite a summons issued on March 5, 2025.
Magistrate Emmanuel Iyanna issued the arrest order on Thursday, March 13, rejecting appeals from VDM’s lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, who urged the court to allow him to present his client personally. The magistrate stood firm, insisting that security agencies must bring VDM to court.
However, the activist, currently in China, dismissed the arrest warrant as “laughable and unjust” in a fiery video statement. He questioned why the court did not consider his absence from Nigeria when the lawsuit was filed, accusing the judiciary of using the law as a weapon rather than a tool for justice. With his trademark boldness, VDM framed the situation as a targeted attack and vowed to expose corruption within the judicial system.
“This is not about justice; it’s about silencing the truth,” VDM declared in the video. “I will not be intimidated, and my voice will not be silenced. If I return to Nigeria in handcuffs, it changes nothing. The truth will prevail.”
VDM also reiterated his claims that Mercy Chinwo is using her influence within law enforcement to target her former record label boss, Ezekiel Onyedikachukwu, also known as Eezee Tee. The activist has been a vocal critic of what he describes as systemic corruption and abuse of power in Nigeria, often using his platform to call out influential figures.
The arrest warrant has sparked a wave of reactions online, with supporters praising VDM’s courage and critics questioning his methods. As the legal battle unfolds, the case has become a flashpoint in the ongoing debate about freedom of speech, judicial accountability, and the power dynamics between public figures and activists in Nigeria.
For now, VeryDarkMan remains resolute, promising to continue his crusade against corruption and injustice, even as he faces the prospect of arrest upon his return to Nigeria. His defiance has once again thrust him into the spotlight, underscoring his reputation as a fearless and controversial figure in Nigeria’s digital activism landscape.
