Chike claims some Top 10 and Top 20 positions can be bought, shedding light on industry practices
Nigerian singer Chike Ezekpeazu Osebuka, popularly known as Chike, recently raised eyebrows with claims about alleged manipulation on Apple Music Nigeria’s Top Songs charts. Speaking on the show Curiosity Made Me Ask, hosted by Bae U Barbie, Chike suggested that positions in the Top 10 and Top 20 charts are often influenced by paid promotions rather than pure organic streams.
“Your Top 10 and Top 20 on Apple Music is rigged… not all the time, but most times,” Chike explained. He added that artists or their teams can use their budgets to increase visibility by paying to push songs higher up on the chart, with costs potentially reaching up to $30,000. “If I want to be top 10 on Apple Music, I can tell my guys, ‘Okay, please spend $30,000,’ and we’ll go to top 10. But then, it’s not real,” he said, referring to the paid placements.
Chike clarified that while some chart positions are organic, many prominent spots are paid for, benefiting artists with larger promotional budgets. “It’s not everyone,” he noted, “but most times, that’s what’s going on. I’m not going to be spending to compete against people who sometimes have way more money than me.”
Chike’s remarks have sparked conversations among fans and industry insiders, casting a spotlight on the impact of financial clout in shaping Nigeria’s music charts and public perception.
