A somber atmosphere looms over Ogun State as the government announces an investigation into the sale of ‘poisonous’ locally brewed alcoholic drinks following the tragic deaths of some residents who allegedly consumed these beverages. The devastating incidents prompted the authorities to take swift action and address the pressing concerns surrounding these dangerous products.
According to reports, the government received distressing accounts of eleven severe illnesses and eight fatalities, all directly linked to the consumption of locally brewed alcoholic beverages. The Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, issued a statement to journalists in Abeokuta, urging residents to exercise extreme caution and avoid consuming any alcoholic products that have not been approved by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).
One of the reported incidents occurred in Ogbogbo, Ijebu North East area of the state, where six individuals tragically lost their lives after allegedly consuming these hazardous alcoholic drinks. The incident took place during a gathering of seven friends, with the seventh person escaping harm as they had brought their own drink from home.
The distressing events reportedly unfolded between July 18th and 20th, 2023, in two local government areas in Ogun State, specifically Ijebu North East and Odogbolu. In response to these tragic occurrences, the Ministry of Health has initiated a comprehensive investigation into the origin and nature of the toxic products.
As the investigation unfolds, the government advises the public to remain vigilant and abstain from consuming drinks from unverified sources. They stress the importance of adhering to NAFDAC-approved products during this critical period. Additionally, residents are encouraged to promptly report any cases of illness or death linked to similar products or herbal concoctions to the nearest government hospital.
As the community mourns the loss of their fellow residents, the government remains committed to uncovering the truth behind these tragic incidents. The safety and well-being of the people of Ogun State are paramount, and steps will be taken to prevent further harm and hold accountable those responsible for the distribution of these dangerous beverages.
