Manchester City Star Offered Compassionate Leave Following Death of Close Family Friend
Pep Guardiola has expressed uncertainty regarding Erling Haaland’s availability for Manchester City’s upcoming Premier League match against Brentford, following the death of a close family friend. Haaland was offered compassionate leave to grieve the passing of Ivar Eggja, a figure the striker fondly referred to as “uncle,” who passed away at the age of 59.
Eggja played a significant role in Haaland’s personal life and career, helping him settle in each of his club moves, including his transition to Manchester City in 2022. In a recent press conference, Guardiola addressed the situation, saying, “It’s a tough moment for him and his family. Our thoughts are with him and all of his family. We will see tomorrow if he is mentally and physically able to play.”
Haaland posted a heartfelt tribute to Eggja on Instagram, expressing his deep loss. “You are a legend, Ivar. Words cannot describe how much you meant to me! Words cannot describe how much you will be missed! Thank you for everything, you madman. We will see each other again. Rest in peace, Ivar.”
Eggja, who was best man at Haaland’s parents’ wedding, had been a key figure in the footballer’s journey, even assisting Haaland with living arrangements as he moved to new clubs, including Red Bull Salzburg, Borussia Dortmund, and Manchester City. Haaland once credited Eggja’s support as a factor in his success, recalling how Eggja’s help allowed him to focus on football.
With Haaland’s participation in Saturday’s match in question, Manchester City will wait to see whether the striker feels ready to return to the pitch during this difficult time.
