Rodri Won Ballon d’Or 2024, Edging Vinicius Jr. by Just 41 Points

Newly released voting details reveal just how close the Real Madrid star came to winning the coveted trophy.

The official Ballon d’Or voting results have revealed how close Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr. was to clinching the 2024 title, ultimately missing out to Manchester City midfielder Rodri by a narrow 41 points. Rodri’s win at the Paris ceremony last week surprised many fans who had expected the Brazilian winger to take home the trophy.

According to reports from French publication L’Equipe, Rodri secured the Ballon d’Or with 1,170 points, while Vinicius trailed with 1,129 points. Each of the 99 judges worldwide ranked their top 10 players, assigning points from 15 for first place down to one for 10th. In total, 6,633 points were distributed across nominees, underscoring how tight the final 41-point gap truly was.

The report also highlights surprising omissions: five judges left Rodri out of their top 10 entirely, while only three failed to include Vinicius. Jude Bellingham, who finished third, received the top spot on five judges’ lists, and Real Madrid teammates Dani Carvajal and Toni Kroos were each awarded first place by a handful of voters as well.

Beyond the Rodri-Vinicius rivalry, other players like Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland, and Lautaro Martínez also received 15-point rankings from judges outside the Real Madrid roster. Vinicius may have narrowly missed the individual honor, but Real Madrid celebrated major achievements, earning awards for Best Men’s Club and Best Men’s Coach for Carlo Ancelotti. However, no representatives from the club attended the ceremony, as Real Madrid opted to boycott in protest, feeling that Vinicius had been unfairly overlooked.
