Roma Coach Jose Mourinho Receives Four-Match UEFA Suspension; West Ham Fans Face European Ban

Jose Mourinho, the coach of Roma, has been handed a four-match suspension by UEFA in response to his behavior during last month’s Europa League final. The Portuguese manager faced widespread criticism for directing abusive language towards English referee Anthony Taylor following his team’s defeat to Sevilla.

In addition, UEFA announced that West Ham United fans would be banned from attending their next away match in European competition, with an additional match suspended for a period of two years. This action was taken due to incidents involving Hammers supporters throwing projectiles onto the pitch during their Europa Conference League final victory over Fiorentina in Prague earlier this month.

During the match, Roma defender Cristiano Biraghi sustained a head injury from an object thrown from the crowd, highlighting the severity of the incident. Mourinho, in his post-match press conference, criticized referee Taylor, and subsequently, video footage emerged on social media showing the former Chelsea and Manchester United manager gesturing and uttering the word “disgrace” towards Taylor and the officials in the stadium car park. The Premier League and Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) condemned the subsequent footage of Taylor being confronted by angry fans at Budapest Airport.

West Ham United also condemned the behavior of a section of their supporters following Biraghi’s injury. The club issued a statement on the evening of the final, expressing a zero-tolerance approach and pledging to pass on the details of those identified to the police. The identified individuals would face indefinite bans, preventing them from entering London Stadium or traveling with the club. The statement emphasized that such behavior has no place at West Ham United.

In addition to the fan ban, UEFA confirmed that West Ham United had been fined 8,000 euros (£6,882) for the pitch invasion incident.

The disciplinary actions taken by UEFA against Mourinho and West Ham United underscore the governing body’s commitment to maintaining integrity and fair play within European competitions. These incidents serve as reminders that inappropriate behavior and actions will be met with strict sanctions in order to uphold the values of the sport.
