Ruben Amorim Already Regretting Man Utd Move, Says Paul Merson

The young Portuguese manager struggles to find his footing at Old Trafford as the club languishes in 13th place.

Former Arsenal midfielder and Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has suggested that Ruben Amorim may already regret his decision to join Manchester United. The 39-year-old Portuguese manager took over as Erik ten Hag’s successor in November but has faced a difficult start to life at Old Trafford.

Under Amorim’s leadership, United have lost seven of their 16 matches, leaving them 13th in the Premier League table, a staggering 15 points behind Manchester City, who sit in fourth place. The slump has left fans and pundits questioning whether Amorim’s move from Sporting CP was the right decision.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday, Merson shared his doubts about the young tactician’s situation:
“This man’s 39 years of age. I mean, there are players just finishing their footballing careers at 38. He’s young in management—really young. He did well in Portugal, but now he’s at one of the biggest clubs in the world. By far not the best team in the world, but one of the biggest clubs. And he’s finding it hard. The pressure’s on him.”

Merson noted that Amorim is likely grappling with the enormity of the task and the expectations that come with managing a club of Manchester United’s stature.
“Someone’s obviously said to him, ‘You need to backtrack on blaming the players and start taking responsibility yourself.’ Because the players won’t have that. But it’s going to be hard for him. I don’t see where this turns around.”

Questioning the Decision

Reflecting on Amorim’s decision to leave Sporting CP, where he had achieved considerable success, Merson speculated that the manager might already be second-guessing his move:
“I think the manager will be sitting there, deep down, thinking, ‘Should I have taken this job?’ He didn’t want to take it until the end of the season, and now he’s probably thinking, ‘I’m not sure I can do this job.’”

The challenges extend beyond Amorim’s inexperience. Merson highlighted the difficulties posed by Financial Fair Play restrictions and a squad that, in his view, lacks quality.
“I don’t think it’s just him. Any manager would find it tough. Look at where they are in the league—they’re 13th. Bournemouth have got better players. When has that ever happened?”

A Tough Road Ahead

Amorim, who gained widespread acclaim for his achievements with Sporting CP, now faces one of the toughest periods of his managerial career. With Manchester United struggling to perform on the pitch and mounting pressure from fans and pundits, the Portuguese tactician has a daunting task ahead to turn the season around.

As the season progresses, it remains to be seen whether Amorim can overcome these challenges or whether this chapter at Old Trafford will end in regret.
