Sean Combs Placed on Suicide Watch Ahead of Federal Trial

Hip-Hop Mogul Awaits Trial on Charges of Sex Trafficking and Racketeering After Being Denied Bail

Sean “Diddy” Combs has been placed on suicide watch while in federal custody as he awaits trial on serious charges of sex trafficking and racketeering, according to reports from NBC News and People on Friday (Sept. 20).

The move is described as “procedural with high-profile clients,” an insider told NBC News, with sources explaining to People that it’s a preventative measure.

The Bad Boy Records founder was denied bail at his Sept. 17 arraignment following a grand jury indictment that accused him of a decades-long racketeering operation involving forced labor, kidnapping, arson, and bribery. If convicted of the three felony charges, Combs faces up to life in prison.

Combs pleaded not guilty to all charges the day after his arrest and his lawyers requested a $50 million bond for his release. However, Magistrate Judge Robyn F. Tarnofsky denied bail, citing him as a flight risk and expressing concerns that he could potentially intimidate witnesses. His request for bail was denied a second time on Wednesday (Sept. 18).

As Combs prepares for his initial pretrial conference next week before Judge Andrew L. Carter, Jr., his legal team has requested a transfer to a facility in Essex County, New Jersey, citing concerns over his safety at the Metropolitan Detention Center.

The U.S. Department of Justice defines suicide watch as a measure for monitoring inmates who may be at risk, requiring frequent observation by staff trained to recognize suicidal behavior. The precaution highlights the seriousness of the situation as the hip-hop titan faces a lengthy legal battle.
