Seun Kuti Fires Back: My Career Doesn’t Need Reviving

Afrobeat Star Denies Using Wizkid’s Name for Clout, Points to Global Tour Success

Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has forcefully dismissed claims that he is criticizing Grammy-winning star Wizkid to generate publicity or “revive” his own career.

The backlash began after Kuti made repeated critical comments about Wizkid and his fanbase during recent online livestreams, leading some to accuse him of chasing relevance. Kuti directly addressed these allegations in a new livestream, expressing frustration and pointing to his own touring record as proof of his standing.

“Some people are saying I am trying to use Wizkid to revive my career,” Kuti said. “When did my career die for me to be trying to revive it? Last year alone, I did 82 shows globally.”

To counter the narrative, he listed his international reach: “I sold out shows in Australia, Europe, America, and Brazil. I have people who are fans of my music worldwide.”

Using a metaphor to emphasize there is room for all artists to succeed, he added, “I call myself Big Bird because the sky is big for everybody. Because no matter how big you are, you can’t occupy the whole sky.”

Kuti concluded with a pointed remark, leaving the “revival” label for others: “People whose careers need revival know themselves. It is not me.” His comments frame the dispute not as a bid for attention, but as a defense of his own established legacy in the music world.
