Nigerian Artist Shares Life as a ‘House Husband’ and the Cultural Clash That Ended His Marriage
Nigerian singer Akinmayokun Awodumila, widely known as May D, has candidly opened up about his secret marriage to a Swedish woman, his experience as a “house husband,” and their eventual divorce during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Speaking on The Honest Bunch podcast, the “Soundtrack” hitmaker recounted how his journey to Sweden for a show turned into a decision to settle down with his then-girlfriend. Taking on the role of a stay-at-home dad, May D prioritized raising their child while his wife worked.
“I was a house husband. What do you want me to do? I should go and work? My wife was working, but when I go for shows, I make five times what she earns in a month,” he said, describing how his income from performances allowed the arrangement to work.
Despite his unconventional role, May D reflected on being comfortable and content. “I had my baby, and my wife couldn’t be the one taking care of the baby and working at the same time,” he explained.
However, the relationship came to an abrupt end during the pandemic. May D revealed that being stuck in Nigeria due to COVID-19 restrictions led to their separation. “We got divorced during COVID-19 because I got stuck in Nigeria. That was how she divorced me. You know they think differently from us,” he said, hinting at cultural differences that may have played a role.
