Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is reportedly contemplating managerial changes as pressure mounts on current boss Erik ten Hag following a disappointing start to the 2024/25 season.
United’s recent 3-0 defeat to Liverpool at Old Trafford has intensified scrutiny on Ten Hag, leaving the Dutchman in a precarious position just three games into the new campaign. After a lackluster 1-0 victory against Fulham in the season opener, United suffered back-to-back losses to Brighton and Liverpool, raising concerns about Ten Hag’s future at the club.
Ten Hag’s position was previously secured by winning the 2024 FA Cup final against rivals Manchester City, a triumph that seemingly saved him from being sacked. However, United’s league performance last season was historically poor, finishing eighth with a negative goal difference—their worst-ever Premier League finish.
Despite the FA Cup victory, Ratcliffe reportedly had reservations about Ten Hag and explored alternative options. The British billionaire was said to have approached Thomas Tuchel and expressed strong interest in then-England manager Gareth Southgate, but neither were available, leading to Ten Hag receiving a contract extension.
While Manchester United CEO Omar Berrada and sporting director Dan Ashworth publicly backed Ten Hag in a statement released after the humiliating defeat to Liverpool, behind-the-scenes discussions suggest a different story. Reports have emerged that Ratcliffe is considering a managerial change, with Tuchel reportedly his top choice should Ten Hag be dismissed.
Spanish sources indicate that Tuchel is “very popular” at Old Trafford, with two other potential candidates being discussed. The names linked to replace Ten Hag include Tuchel, former Chelsea manager Graham Potter, and Joachim Low, who led Germany to World Cup success in 2014. All three are currently available and reportedly open to the challenge of revitalizing United.
As patience appears to be wearing thin, the club’s board is said to be “exploring alternatives” to Ten Hag in case results do not improve. The Dutchman is reportedly losing support at Old Trafford, and speculation is growing that he may be on borrowed time.
With Ten Hag now joint-favorite in the Premier League sack race alongside Everton’s Sean Dyche, reports suggest that the next few matches could be crucial in determining his fate. If results do not turn around, Ratcliffe is expected to “take a new direction,” with former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy also emerging as a potential successor.
