Singer Seeks June 26 Hearing, Insists Controversial Video Was Just for “Clout”
Nigerian artist Speed Darlington has formally requested the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) to postpone his scheduled appearance until June 26, 2025, following backlash over a viral video suggesting he had an inappropriate relationship with a minor.
In an Instagram statement, the controversial performer apologized for the uproar but maintained his comments were purely for shock value. “The video was a joke that got blown out of proportion,” Darlington wrote, denying any actual misconduct.
The singer emphasized his willingness to cooperate with authorities while pushing for the delay, stating: “If the agency requires further clarifications, I undertake to avail myself at the agency’s office on June 26, 2025.” He framed the request as necessary to properly address what he called a “misinterpreted” satirical clip.
NAPTIP has yet to publicly respond to Darlington’s postponement request as debates continue about accountability for inflammatory online content, even when labeled as “entertainment.” Legal experts suggest the agency may still proceed with its investigation regardless of the singer’s preferred timeline.
