BBNaija Star Slams Nigerian Artists for Not Showcasing Local Designers at Fashion’s Biggest Night”
Former BBNaija star Tacha Akide has sparked controversy online after calling out Nigeria’s biggest music stars for their fashion choices at this year’s Met Gala.
The reality TV personality didn’t hold back in a fiery social media rant, accusing Burna Boy, Tems, and Ayra Starr of failing to represent Nigerian creativity at Monday night’s prestigious event in New York.
“I love these artists, but they dropped the ball big time,” Tacha said. “This was our chance to shine on a global stage, and they showed up in outfits that didn’t tell our story.”
Tacha took particular issue with Tems’ choice to wear British-Ghanaian designer Ozwald Boateng, suggesting the singer wasn’t the designer’s top priority. “The outfit was confusing,” she said. “We have amazing Nigerian designers like Veekee James and Swanky Jerry who would’ve created magic for her.”
The criticism didn’t stop there. Tacha called Ayra Starr’s look “underwhelming” for someone representing the new wave of Afrobeats. “Our Gen Z queen should have shut down the red carpet! This look was giving ‘last-minute panic’,” she joked.
Even self-proclaimed “African Giant” Burna Boy didn’t escape Tacha’s sharp tongue. “Burna, you’re usually flawless, but that yellow shirt? It looked rushed, babe,” she said, before offering some tough love: “Next time, if international designers aren’t treating you like priority, come home to our own talents.”
This year’s Met Gala, themed “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” saw other Nigerians like Chimamanda Adichie receive praise for their looks. But Tacha’s comments have ignited a heated debate online about whether Nigeria’s music stars are doing enough to promote local fashion talent on global platforms.
As the internet buzzes with reactions, one thing is clear – next year’s Met Gala red carpet just got more interesting, with Nigerian fans now expecting their stars to bring the heat with authentic African designs.
