Grammy-winning Nigerian artist Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has shared her views on afrobeats, describing it as a genre meant for escapism. According to Tems, in Nigeria, afrobeats is created to help people escape from the tough realities of life, rather than to address social issues.
Tems made these comments in response to Jamaican reggae icon Buju Banton’s recent criticism of afrobeats. During an episode of the ‘Shopping The Sneakers’ podcast, Banton claimed that afrobeats lacks depth and will fade over time.
Tems acknowledged Banton’s perspective, stating, “I understand where Buju Banton is coming from. Reggae is not afrobeats, and in Nigeria, afrobeats is specifically for escapism; that’s the purpose of afrobeats.”
