Controversial Singer Claims Agency Overstepped as R*pe Allegation Storm Rages
Nigerian musician Darlington Okoye, better known as Speed Darlington or Akpi, has fired back at the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) after the agency declared him wanted over allegations of r*pe, cyberbullying, and cyberstalking.
In a bold statement to Saturday Beats, the polarizing artist dismissed NAPTIP’s public notice, insisting the agency lacks the legal authority to issue such an alert.
“Thanks for the heads up, but I’m not worried,” Darlington said. “They have no right to declare me wanted. My lawyer has already sent it (the notice) to me. They just want to embarrass themselves. My lawyer will handle it.”
A Month-Long Standoff
NAPTIP’s declaration on Friday comes after weeks of tension. The agency first summoned Darlington on May 30, 2025, following a since-deleted Instagram Live video where he shockingly claimed to have had s*x with a 15-year-old girl.
Though he initially requested a postponement to June 26, citing prior commitments, NAPTIP rejected the delay, stressing the “urgent national importance” of the case. When he failed to appear by the June 2 deadline, the agency escalated matters—leading to Friday’s public notice.
“Just a Prank” – Backlash Over Controversial Stunt
Darlington later claimed his viral statement was a publicity stunt to promote his new music, declaring, “I need controversy to eat.” In another post, he labeled the video “a prank.”
But critics and child protection advocates have slammed his explanation, arguing that joking about child s*xual abuse is harmful and irresponsible, regardless of intent.
What’s Next?
With NAPTIP pushing forward and Darlington vowing legal resistance, the standoff appears far from over. Will the singer face consequences, or will his legal team successfully challenge the agency’s move?
One thing is certain: the controversy has only deepened—and Darlington’s reputation hangs in the balance.
