Thousands Rally in London Against Supreme Court Ruling on Trans Rights

Protesters Decry Decision Defining “Woman” as Biological Only, Fearing Rollback of Equality Protections

A sea of pink, white, and blue flags filled Parliament Square on Saturday as thousands of transgender and non-binary people, alongside allies and families, protested the UK Supreme Court’s controversial ruling that legally defines a “woman” solely by biological sex.

The decision, handed down Wednesday, clarified that the Equality Act 2010 does not include transgender women—even those with a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC)—under its legal definition of women. While the court emphasized that trans people remain protected from discrimination under the law, many demonstrators expressed fear that the ruling could weaken their rights and access to single-sex spaces.

“It’s one hell of a turnout, and there’s a really strong sense of unity and solidarity,” said Jamie Strudwick, one of the protest organizers, speaking to The Guardian“I think it’s impossible to compare—it’s like nothing I’ve ever seen before.”

The ruling was celebrated by gender-critical groups, including For Women Scotland—backed by author J.K. Rowling—who argue that biological definitions are necessary to protect women’s safety in spaces like shelters and changing rooms. However, trans activists say the decision fuels discrimination and leaves them vulnerable.

“This isn’t just about legal definitions—it’s about whether we’re seen as who we are,” said one protester, holding a sign reading “Trans Rights Are Human Rights.” “We’re not going back in the closet.”

The demonstration highlighted the deepening divide in the UK over gender recognition laws, with campaigners vowing to keep fighting for broader legal protections. As the crowd dispersed, chants of “Trans lives matter!” echoed through Westminster—a defiant response to a ruling that many fear could embolden further rollbacks of their rights.
