President Tinubu to Commission Projects as University of Ilorin Marks Historic Dual Convocation

Milestone Occasion Sees Double Graduation Ceremony and Noteworthy Events

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to commission recently completed projects as part of the university’s combined 37th and 38th convocation ceremonies. This marks a historic occasion as the university graduates students from two consecutive academic sessions simultaneously, a first in decades.

The three-day-long convocation ceremonies, taking place between Friday, October 20, and Monday, October 23, 2023, will witness the graduation of students from both the 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 academic sessions. These graduates will be awarded first degrees, postgraduate degrees, and diplomas during the momentous event.

The ceremonial preliminaries began with a special Jumaat service at the University Central Mosque last Friday, followed by an interdenominational service on Sunday, October 15, 2023, at the Chapel of the Light, University of Ilorin.

According to the programme schedule released by the University Registrar, Mr. Mansur Adeleke Alfanla, the main convocation events are set to commence this Wednesday. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Wahab Olasupo Egbewole (SAN), will address a World Press Conference at the university auditorium, highlighting the convocation events and showcasing achievements in the past year.

The Convocation Drama, titled “Jeong Do-Jeon (The Clash of Power),” will be presented by the performing troupe of the institution’s Department of the Performing Arts.

A focal point of the convocation ceremonies is the Convocation Lecture, which will be delivered by the renowned Nigeria-born USA-based Professor of History, Toyin Falola. Professor Falola, who lectures at the Department of History, University of Texas, Austin, will speak on “Modernity, Modernisation, and Values.”

Following the lecture, the ceremony will proceed with the graduation of the 2020–2021 graduates of 4-year and 5-year academic programs. The presence of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to commission completed projects adds another layer of significance to this dual convocation event at the University of Ilorin.
