Actor Shares Insights into Channeling Portable’s Persona and Navigating Creative Challenges for Iconic Role

Nollywood actor Tobi Makinde has provided a glimpse into the challenging and transformative experience he encountered while working on the immensely popular Nigerian movie, “A Tribe Called Judah,” where he portrayed the character Shina.

In an exclusive interview with Legit.ng, Tobi Makinde, who played a pivotal role in the hit film, discussed the creative nuances and personal challenges he faced during the filming process. The actor revealed that the role of Shina presented him with a unique opportunity to explore uncharted territories in his acting career, pushing him to new creative heights.

Having previously portrayed a mobster in other roles, Tobi acknowledged that Shina’s character demanded a different approach and required him to delve into unfamiliar aspects of his craft. To authentically capture the essence of Shina, Tobi drew inspiration from the persona of controversial singer Habeeb Okikiola, widely known as Portable.

“When the role was given to me, the individual who came to mind was controversial singer Habeeb Okikiola, also known as Portable. I had to pick a reference, and it was Singer Portable because when I saw the character that was being created, I felt that he was the best reference to use to interpret the role,” Tobi explained.

He further elaborated on the creative process, emphasizing the need to immerse himself in Portable’s social media content and videos to understand and embody the character fully. Tobi expressed admiration for Portable’s ability to evoke laughter and admitted to learning valuable insights from observing the singer’s distinctive style.

Tobi Makinde also addressed the preconceived notions some people had about him due to his on-screen portrayal, including flaunting a unique hairstyle. The actor emphasized that actors draw inspiration from diverse sources, incorporating both personal experiences and insights gained from observing others.

“The character Shina stretched me creatively in the sense that I had to enter another realm, a realm that I had never been to before. Actors draw inspiration from so many things. Some draw from past experiences, and some draw from the experiences of other people,” Tobi shared.
