Tragic Deaths in Angola: Over 50 Victims Perish After Forced Consumption of Alleged Witchcraft Potion

Police Report Horrific Incident Near Camacupa, Highlighting Persistence of Superstitious Beliefs

Angola has been shaken by a horrifying incident resulting in the deaths of at least 50 individuals who were coerced into drinking a herbal potion to prove they were not practitioners of witchcraft, as reported by police on Thursday.

The tragic events unfolded over the past two months near the town of Camacupa, where local councilor Luzia Filemone revealed to national radio that traditional healers had administered a lethal mixture during the procedures.

“More than 50 victims were forced to drink this mysterious liquid which, according to traditional healers, proves whether or not a person practices witchcraft,” stated Filemone, shedding light on the disturbing practices prevalent in some rural communities.

Antonio Hossi, a spokesperson for the police, condemned the widespread belief in black magic that persists in certain regions of the southern African country. “It’s a widespread practice to make people drink the supposed poison because of the belief in witchcraft,” Hossi remarked.

One alarming aspect of the situation is the absence of laws addressing witchcraft practices in Angola. Suspected individuals are compelled to consume a poisonous herbal concoction known as ‘Mbulungo’. If they succumb to the potion, it is deemed as evidence of their guilt.

This tragedy comes amidst a backdrop of superstition-fueled incidents in Africa. In a separate case last month, suspected death-cult leader Paul Mackenzie was arrested in Kenya for the alleged murder of hundreds of his followers. They were led to believe that they would encounter Jesus by starving themselves, leading to mass suicides in a remote Shakahola forest area.

Authorities discovered 429 bodies and numerous graves, with autopsies revealing that most victims died from starvation. However, disturbingly, some, including children, had allegedly been subjected to beatings or strangulation, underscoring the gravity of superstition-driven violence in the region.
