Transfer Gossip: Arsenal Eye Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres Following Ruben Amorim’s Expected Exit to Manchester United

Gyokeres, Linked with Arsenal, Reportedly Dissatisfied by Amorim’s Departure, Fueling Speculation of a January Transfer

Sporting CP’s star striker Viktor Gyokeres could be set to leave the Portuguese club following the anticipated exit of head coach Ruben Amorim to Manchester United. Arsenal, who had a keen eye on the Swedish international over the summer, may reignite their interest amid reports of Gyokeres’ growing dissatisfaction with Amorim’s departure, according to O Jogo.

Viktor Gyokeres

This summer, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta identified Gyokeres as a top candidate for the No. 9 role, but a high price tag led the Gunners to pause their pursuit. Sporting’s insistence on the forward’s full €100 million release clause discouraged Arsenal, despite Gyokeres being a prime target. Chelsea also briefly considered the forward, though both Premier League clubs backed away as the player opted to stay in Lisbon, largely due to his commitment to working under Amorim.

Following Amorim’s decision to leave for Old Trafford, Gyokeres and teammate Morten Hjulmand, who had previously been courted by several European clubs, are reportedly disappointed. This change in leadership has left both players questioning their future at Sporting, especially as they had been convinced to stay by promises of continuity under Amorim’s guidance.

During the summer, Gyokeres’ agent, Hasan Cetinkaya, hinted that his client’s commitment to Sporting was tied closely to Amorim’s leadership. “Viktor came precisely because of Ruben,” Cetinkaya told A Bola. He revealed that multiple clubs offered Coventry City and Gyokeres more money, yet they chose Sporting due to the manager’s influence, highlighting Amorim as a “coach at another level.”

With the bond between Gyokeres and Amorim now potentially severed, sources suggest a January transfer is highly plausible. Arsenal, well aware of the striker’s qualities and now possibly facing a more negotiable release fee, may have a second chance to land the 26-year-old Swede.
