Joan Laporta aims to secure Norwegian star to cement his legacy as Barcelona president.
Erling Haaland has been heavily linked with a potential move to Barcelona in the summer of 2025, with reports suggesting that the Spanish giants are preparing to go “all-out” to secure the Manchester City striker. According to Sport, Barcelona president Joan Laporta is determined to make a statement signing before his term ends in 2026, and Haaland is his top target.
Laporta views the acquisition of Haaland as a way to bolster his legacy at the club and improve his re-election prospects. The Barcelona chief is confident of landing the Norwegian star, thanks in part to the close relationship between Haaland’s entourage and the club.
Haaland, who has long been rumored to have an eye on La Liga, has seen speculation about a move to Spain intensify in recent weeks. Both Barcelona and Real Madrid had shown interest in signing the forward when he left Borussia Dortmund for Manchester City in 2022, but it now appears Barcelona is leading the race.
Fueling these rumors is Barcelona’s upcoming sponsorship deal with Nike, which could provide the financial backing needed to meet Haaland’s release clause and finance the high-profile move.
Several factors may contribute to Haaland’s departure from Manchester City at the end of the season. First, Haaland is said to have never intended to stay at City long-term, with this being his third season at the club. By the end of the current campaign, it is believed he will feel he has accomplished his goals, having already won two Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy.
Additionally, Pep Guardiola is set to leave City when his contract expires in 2025, with little indication that he will sign an extension. This uncertainty over the manager’s future could further influence Haaland’s decision.
Manchester City is also dealing with significant legal challenges, as the club faces 115 charges for alleged financial rule breaches in the Premier League. Severe penalties, including relegation, are possible, and Haaland is reportedly wary of the potential consequences, pushing him closer to a move.
Haaland’s current contract includes a release clause worth €200 million, which became active in 2024 but is only applicable to clubs outside of the Premier League. It is also reported that this clause will decrease each year, with a second release clause worth €175 million set to activate in the summer of 2025, potentially making him more accessible for Barcelona.
Since joining Manchester City, Haaland has made an immense impact, scoring 90 goals in 98 games and becoming a key figure in the club’s dominance. His form has continued into the current season, with 10 goals in his first seven Premier League matches. However, as the season progresses, the likelihood of his move to La Liga—specifically Barcelona—appears to be increasing.
