Transfer gossip: Seven Liverpool midfield options include Man Utd target and Man City flop

Liverpool’s desperate search for a central midfielder might even take them back to Kalvin Phillips…

LIVERPOOL TARGET TALKS TO BAYERN
The saving grace is that PSV Eindhoven midfielder Ibrahim Sangare is not joining Chelsea like Moises Caicedo and now Romeo Lavia. Phew. But the bad news is that competing with Nottingham Forest for a player with a £32m release clause has become missing out to Bayern Munich, who can obviously offer Champions League football and a likely title challenge.

Foot Mercato claim that Ivorian midfielder Sangare is discussing personal terms with Bayern, which puts them ahead of PSG in the race. Liverpool do not even merit a mention.

“Liverpool will now move on to different targets,” said Fabrizio Romano after the Caicedo and Lavia blows. “They keep following both Khephren Thuram and Manu Kone as they did earlier in the summer, but let’s see who they will ‘attack’ now.”

THE RED LIST
‘Liverpool face a race against time to land much-needed reinforcements in midfield with Fulham’s Joao Palhinha and Crystal Palace youngster Cheick Doucoure among the favoured options,’ say the Mail, but they claim that the Reds are ‘unsure’ whether to pay the £60m asking price for the 28-year-old Fulham midfielder. Hmmm. They might well find that asking price has gone up since they showed their hand with a £110m bid for Caicedo.

They have already been told by Palace that their asking price for Doucoure – after just one season in the Premier League – is £70m.

Two other names said to be ‘under consideration’ despite being initially ruled out are Manchester United target Sofyan Amrabat and fringe Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips. The other two players mentioned in an extensive report are Thuram and Fluminese midfielder Andre.

MAN CITY TO STEP UP RECRUITMENT
The news that Manchester City will lose Kevin de Bruyne for up to four months is likely to accelerate their recruitment this summer. The Times say they ‘had already tabled a bid for Lucas Paquetá, the West Ham United midfielder, and had already let it be known that they were interested in Jérémy Doku, the £40 million-rated Rennes winger.’

Paqueta is likely to cost them a cool £85m, though West Ham could be persuaded to complete a slightly cheaper deal is City send Cole Palmer the other way, with the City youngster said by The Guardian to be a target. David Moyes apparently wants Palmer to play on the right, with Jarrod Bowen moved into a more central role. But Palmer is also a target for Brighton.
