Wolves’ Matheus Nunes has gone on strike to force through a Manchester City move, but will face zero consequences if he fails. So that’s nice for him.

The big two of transfer news, Ornstein and Romero, both involved in the developing Matheus Nunes to Man City story. The player is currently not training with Gary O’Neil’s side as he looks to force through a move to the champions, but in a clear example of why he’s gone on strike he will apparently face zero consequences from his current club if he finds himself still there after the music stops. He will “be reintegrated into the team if there is no deal with the Treble winners” before the window shuts on Friday. That’s nice for him, isn’t it? We’re sympathetic to the idea of a player deciding he’d rather play for Pep Guardiola and Manchester City than Gary O’Neil and Wolves, but it still feels like there should be rules.
Anyway, Ornstein says Wolves have turned down an opening offer of £47.2m from City, while Romero reckons City are increasingly confident of getting their man and will come back with £51.5m and see whether that might just be the magic number.
BIG SIX SWAP SHOP OPENS FOR BUSINESS
All manner of faintly baffling intra-Big Six moves being touted around the place at the moment. News that Manchester United might make a move for Spurs’ Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg surfaced last night and was not, it’s fair to say, a development received with great cheer by United fans. Hojbjerg is currently outside Spurs’ fresh new starting XI but has come off the bench in the last couple of games. Spurs for their part need to get some bodies out the door to free up space for a couple more new faces.
Chelsea, meanwhile, have had a little look at the make-up of their squad and decided what it needs is another clever little attacker to play in the hole and look for pockets of space, so they’re after Arsenal benchwarmer Emile Smith Rowe, according to the Mail. Sure, why not. If not him, then Barcelona’s Ferran Torres or Raphinha are also possibilities as the Blues remain resolutely determined to have no identifiable plan or through line to their prolific yet haphazard transfer activity.
Other moves between Premier League clubs that could still happen this week are Harry Maguire to West Ham – although United may now keep him as injuries bite – and Brennan Johnson leaving for Nottingham Forest for Tottenham or possibly Brentford or even, of course, Chelsea. United have also asked Brentford about Rico Henry as they seek a Luke Shaw replacement, while Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa both have an eye on Nuno Tavares, who has apparently lost the faith of Arsenal tinkerman Mikel Arteta.
McTOMINO
You almost feel like it’s something that doesn’t really need saying, but apparently it does: Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel isn’t that keen on a move for Scott McTominay. United want £45m for him, according to the Telegraph, and there had been some chatter that him heading to Munich could grease some wheels to facilitate Ryan Gravenberch – also wanted by Liverpool – to head the other way.
