Transfer Rumours: Xavi Emerges as Leading Candidate for Manchester United Manager Role

Reports Claim Former Barcelona Boss Wants to Bring Key Players Gavi and Bernal in Ambitious Rebuild

Former Barcelona manager Xavi Hernández has set his sights on a reunion with two of his former players if he succeeds in landing the vacant Manchester United job, according to reports emerging from Spain.

The speculation follows United’s confirmation on Monday that they had parted ways with Ruben Amorim after a turbulent 14-month tenure. Xavi has since emerged as a leading candidate to lead what the club hopes will be a long-term rebuild, with an interim manager expected to hold the fort until the summer.

Should he take the helm, Spanish outlet Sport claims Xavi has already “called” to bring Barcelona midfielders Gavi and Marc Bernal with him to Old Trafford. The report suggests he views the pair, who have seen limited playing time this season, as central figures in his prospective project.

“Xavi has always been a staunch supporter of Gavi,” the report states. “He is convinced that in the Premier League he can unleash his full potential.” Regarding the highly-rated 18-year-old Bernal, it adds that Xavi sees him as “a modern defensive midfielder, capable of organizing the team and providing balance.”

The links align with analysis from European football expert Kevin Hatchard, who told Sky Sports that Xavi is a “realistic” target for United. “He’s a football obsessive,” Hatchard said, “but he wouldn’t be someone who would just go along with what the club necessarily wanted.”

Xavi’s potential appointment would mark a significant shift in philosophy at Old Trafford, emphasizing a possession-based 4-3-3 system and youth development. For now, the club’s immediate focus is on stability, with Darren Fletcher set to take temporary charge. But the prospect of a Xavi-led era, built around talents like Gavi and Bernal, is already generating intrigue as United plan their next chapter.
