As a major target heads to City, the Premier League rivals turn their attention to a breakout talent starring at the Africa Cup of Nations.
In a swift pivot in the January transfer window, Liverpool and Manchester United are set for a head-to-head battle to sign RB Leipzig’s exciting winger Yan Diomande. The chase intensifies after both clubs missed out on primary target Antoine Semenyo, who is now headed to Manchester City.
The 19-year-old Ivorian, currently showcasing his skills at the Africa Cup of Nations, has emerged as a top alternative.
With seven goals and three assists already this season for Leipzig, Diomande’s “pace, dribbling ability and big potential” have put Europe’s elite on high alert, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
“I am told Manchester United and Tottenham recently sent scouts to follow him,” Romano noted, adding that while Leipzig are financially strong and may wish to keep him, “Diomande is definitely one to watch.”
The pursuit appears to be accelerating rapidly. A report from an insider on X, claiming an exclusive from a team of reporters, states that Diomande’s agent is now travelling to England with plans to discuss terms with both Manchester United and Liverpool.
The report highlighted the “surprising” nature of Liverpool’s parallel request for a meeting.
For Manchester United, a move for Diomande could signal a chain reaction within their squad, potentially paving the way for the departure of forward Joshua Zirkzee. Manager Ruben Amorim recently emphasized the club’s cautious approach, stating, “It’s going to be hard for someone to leave the club if we don’t get a substitution. We are short.”
As the deadline approaches, the scramble for talent underscores the high-pressure nature of the mid-season market. With Diomande captivating audiences in Africa and attracting suitors in England, the young winger finds himself at the centre of a classic Premier League power struggle.
