In an unfortunate turn of events, the UEFA Champions League qualifier match between AEK Athens and Dinamo Zagreb, scheduled for Tuesday, has been postponed due to a tragic incident involving a football fan. The decision comes following a deadly brawl that erupted between supporters, resulting in the unfortunate death of a fan.
The turmoil unfolded on Monday evening in Nea Filadelfia, an Athens suburb, as a fierce confrontation between AEK Athens and Dinamo Zagreb fans escalated into violence. The Greek police confirmed that during the brawl, a person lost their life due to a stabbing, while eight others sustained injuries from the brutal altercation.
Reports indicated that fans from both sides engaged in dangerous behavior, hurling flames, objects, and stones at one another. The situation took an even darker turn as some supporters employed bats to physically attack their opponents. In the aftermath of the brawl, law enforcement took swift action, arresting a total of 98 individuals who were involved in the violent conflict.
Dinamo Zagreb responded to the disturbing incident with a statement condemning the riots that took place in Athens, expressing strong disapproval of the violence that unfolded.
As a result of this tragic incident, UEFA, the governing body for European football, made the difficult decision to postpone the first-leg match of the Champions League qualifier between AEK Athens and Dinamo Zagreb. The Croatian club confirmed the match cancellation in the wake of the unfortunate events. The second leg of this contest had initially been scheduled for August 15 in Zagreb.
Looking ahead, the winner of the AEK Athens vs. Dinamo Zagreb tie was set to face off against Royal Antwerp from Belgium in the subsequent stage of the Champions League playoffs. However, the recent developments have cast uncertainty over the future of the tournament for both teams involved.
