UK Promoter Claims Event Didn’t Sell Out; Burna Boy and Asake Draw Comparisons
Nigerian superstar Wizkid, known globally for his Afrobeats hits, has found himself at the center of a heated conversation about his landmark concert at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. The event, which marked him as the first Nigerian artist to headline the iconic venue, has been praised for its cultural significance but recently faced scrutiny over attendance claims.
During an episode of the Afrobeats Podcast, hosted by Adesope Olajide, UK radio host and promoter Gracey Mae shared a controversial perspective. She alleged that Wizkid’s More Love, Less Ego concert at the 62,850-capacity stadium did not sell out, as widely assumed.
Gracey, who collaborates with Live Nation—the company managing ticketing for major global events—asserted that attendance numbers for the show fell short. Adesope, the podcast host, refrained from disputing her claim, citing her industry expertise.
The concert, held in 2023, was a milestone for Afrobeats, drawing fans and notable figures alike. Wizkid was seen mingling with Premier League stars, including Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka, while Everton’s Alex Iwobi and fellow Nigerian artist Seyi Vibez were also in attendance.
However, Gracey suggested that the Tottenham show marked a peak in Wizkid’s ability to attract such large audiences, hinting at challenges in replicating that scale of turnout.
Drawing comparisons, she highlighted Burna Boy’s track record of consistently filling massive venues, including his sold-out performances in London. Gracey also commented on rising star Asake, acknowledging his meteoric success but cautioning that he is still early in his career to take on stadium-scale events.
