The in-demand manager stays focused on Bundesliga finish amid growing speculation about replacing Ancelotti
Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso skillfully sidestepped questions about a potential summer move to Real Madrid during Friday’s press conference, keeping football fans guessing about his future. With Carlo Ancelotti under pressure after Madrid’s Champions League collapse against Arsenal, Alonso—a Los Blancos legend—has emerged as the frontrunner to take the Bernabéu hotseat.
The 43-year-old, who won LaLiga and the Champions League as a Madrid player between 2009 and 2014, refused to fuel the rumors ahead of Leverkusen’s clash with St. Pauli. “It’s not the right moment to discuss the future,” Alonso said, deflecting attention back to Leverkusen’s push for a strong Bundesliga finish. “We’re in a crucial phase of the season.”
Despite last season’s fairytale Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double—Leverkusen’s first-ever league title—this campaign has been tougher. The Werkself sit six points behind Bayern Munich with five games left and suffered painful cup exits, including a shock German Cup semifinal loss to third-tier Arminia Bielefeld.
Club CEO Fernando Carro recently insisted Alonso remains committed, telling reporters: “He feels at home here. We’re planning preseason and transfers with him.” But Madrid’s interest looms large. Last March, Alonso famously held a press conference to shut down links to Madrid, Liverpool, and Bayern—could history repeat itself?
For now, the former midfield maestro is channeling his focus into salvaging Leverkusen’s season. But as summer approaches, the whispers won’t fade easily. Will Alonso’s next move mirror his pinpoint passes—straight back to the Spanish capital? ⚽🔍
