Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso to Address Victor Boniface’s Reckless Driving Incident

The Bayer Leverkusen forward faces scrutiny after being caught speeding and using his phone while driving.

Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso has confirmed he will take action following Victor Boniface’s involvement in a reckless driving incident in Germany. The 23-year-old forward, who has been in fine form this season with eight goals in 15 appearances, was seen using his phone while driving his Mercedes-AMG at 140 km/h in a 120 km/h zone.

The incident, captured in a video that later surfaced on Instagram, showed Boniface allegedly reading comments about Bayer Leverkusen’s lineup ahead of their Champions League clash with Salzburg. While the video has since been taken down, it has raised concerns about the player’s actions behind the wheel.

Previous Close Call

This is not Boniface’s first driving-related controversy. Just six weeks ago, the former Union Saint-Gilloise striker survived a car crash in Germany after helping Leverkusen to a victory against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Club and Coach Respond

In response to the latest incident, Bayer Leverkusen issued a statement, stating they are investigating the matter and will address the situation appropriately. Head coach Xabi Alonso expressed disappointment during a pre-match press conference and confirmed he plans to speak with Boniface about his behavior.

“I don’t like it. It’s obviously not good, and of course, it’s not allowed to happen,” said Alonso. “I haven’t seen Boni yet, but he knows it’s not allowed. We have to tell him he’s not allowed to do something like this.”

A Season of Highs and Lows

Boniface’s season has been marked by standout performances on the pitch and troubling incidents off it. Despite a thigh injury picked up during the international break with Nigeria, he remains a key player for Leverkusen. The club is currently fourth in the Bundesliga standings, nine points behind leaders Bayern Munich.
