The Grammy-nominated star opens up about a painful three-year period of confusion and the emotional toll of industry conflicts and false rumors.
In a heartfelt and candid interview, acclaimed singer Yemi Alade has shared a surprising and deeply personal struggle, revealing she fell into a period of depression after discovering she had been misrepresenting her own age for three years.
The “Johnny” hitmaker explained that she had consistently identified as 22 years old, only to later realize she was actually 25. The jarring realization sent her into a low point. “I kept saying I was 22 for 3 years and when I realized I was 25, I was depressed for a few days,” she firmly stated during her conversation with media personality Chude Jideonwo.
This personal revelation comes amidst a challenging period for the artist. Last November, she publicly accused two major Nigerian radio stations, Cool FM and Clout Africa FM, of blocklisting her music for nearly a year after she declined to perform at their end-of-year event.
The singer has also recently had to confront damaging falsehoods, vehemently denying widespread rumors that she was sexually harassed, which she labeled “stupidity at its peak.” She highlighted the significant emotional toll such baseless narratives can take on an individual’s mental health.
Through these trials, Alade has turned to social media to share her hard-earned wisdom, often posting about the importance of healthy conflict and setting firm boundaries in relationships, signaling a journey of self-discovery and resilience in the face of public and private pressures.
