Claims Burna Boy Gets Undue Credit for Breaking Records Set by Others
Nigerian singer and instrumentalist Seun Kuti has voiced his frustration, claiming that the media often credits Afrobeats star Burna Boy with records that were set by him and other artists.
Kuti pointed out that Burna Boy was widely reported as the first Nigerian artist to perform at Coachella in 2020, a title he says is false as he himself performed at the festival in 2012.
The Grammy-nominated artist also highlighted how Burna Boy’s first Grammy nomination for Best World Music Album overlooked the multiple nominations his elder brother, Femi Kuti, had received in the same category. In an interview with The Public Republic, Seun Kuti mentioned that his album “Black Times” was nominated for Best World Music Album, yet no African award organizer acknowledged it.
Kuti further expressed his discontent about not being mentioned among Nigerian artists nominated for the 66th Grammys, despite earning a nomination for his contribution to Janelle Monáe’s “Age of Pleasure,” which was up for Album of the Year at the 2024 Grammys.
He lamented, “My brother [Femi Kuti] has been nominated at the Grammys multiple times. I was also nominated in the last edition, but the Nigerian media didn’t mention my name among the Nigerian artists nominated for the 66th Grammys. They act as if I’m from Togo.”
Seun Kuti also criticized the media for saying Burna Boy was the first Nigerian artist to play at Coachella in 2020, ignoring his own performance at the festival in 2012.
