Ayra Starr Reflects on Her Single Status, High Standards, and Dedication to Music

The Afrobeats Sensation Reveals Why She’s Focused on Career Over Romance

Nigerian Afrobeats star Ayra Starr, born Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, recently spoke candidly about her single status and approach to dating, highlighting her high standards and dedication to her career as key factors. In an interview with Coco Jones for Rolling Stone’s “Musicians on Musicians,” the 22-year-old artist shared that her journey to fame before dating had helped shape her expectations for relationships.

“I’m so happy I wasn’t really dating before I started music,” Starr explained. “Now that I’ve waited this long to date, I have very high standards. If it’s going to be hard to meet them, it’s goodbye. I don’t even have time for myself, let alone for a relationship.”

The Grammy-nominated singer, known for her hit “Lagos Love Story,” recently revealed in Dazed Magazine that she’s never experienced a fully committed relationship, despite being a “lover girl” at heart. “I want to fall in love. I wrote ‘Lagos Love Story’ about what I imagine love would feel like. I’ve been in certain situations, but never a fully committed relationship,” she said.

Ayra Starr, who has been working since age 15 as a model and musician, reflected on how her career path has limited her time for dating. She added, “I’ve been on the road, studying, working—now, it’s just me enjoying myself as a young woman. If I want to sing to a cute boy, I’ll do it, because why not?”

With her star on the rise, Ayra Starr remains focused on her music, though she hints that love might find her when the time is right.
