Special Counsel’s Investigation Raises Concerns Over Biden’s Recall of Key Events
In a fervent response to a Justice Department report characterizing him as an “elderly man with a poor memory,” President Joe Biden has vehemently refuted allegations that he struggles to recall significant events. The rebuke follows Special Counsel Robert Hur’s decision not to prosecute Biden for mishandling classified information, detailed in a 345-page document released on Thursday.
Hur’s report scrutinized materials retained by Biden at his personal properties post his vice presidency in 2017, some of which were shared with a ghostwriter for his memoirs. While declining prosecution, Hur’s office expressed doubts about securing a conviction, anticipating Biden’s portrayal at trial as a sympathetic figure with memory limitations.
Biden justified his retention of the materials as memorabilia and personal entitlement, drawing parallels to former President Ronald Reagan’s handling of classified diaries. However, the report highlighted instances where Biden’s memory faltered during interviews with Hur’s team, including forgetting key periods of his vice presidency and the timing of his son Beau’s passing.
“I am well-meaning, I am an elderly man and I know what I am doing,” Biden asserted during a press conference when questioned about the report. Despite assurances of his cognitive acuity, Biden’s remarks were punctuated by a notable gaffe as he mistakenly referred to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi as the leader of Mexico while discussing Gaza.
This incident adds to a string of recent episodes where Biden has confused foreign dignitaries, including misnaming French President Emmanuel Macron as Francois Mitterrand and former German Chancellor Angela Merkel as Helmut Kohl. These inaccuracies have raised concerns about the president’s recall abilities amid ongoing diplomatic engagements.
