Music Star Opens Up About Past Ties to Convicted Fraudster, Says He “Lived a Good Life”
Nigerian music superstar Davido has addressed his past friendship with convicted internet fraudster Ramon Abbas, widely known as Hushpuppi, stating that while they were close, he was unaware of the disgraced socialite’s illegal activities.
In a candid interview, the Afrobeats icon reflected on their relationship, acknowledging Hushpuppi’s lavish lifestyle before his 2020 arrest and subsequent 11-year prison sentence in the U.S. for orchestrating a multi-million-dollar fraud scheme.
“My prayers go out to him, he’s my friend,” Davido said. “I just used to see him around—I never really knew what he was doing. But he lived a good life.”
The singer, who was often spotted with Hushpuppi at high-profile events before his downfall, emphasized that their bond was purely social. He also shared a philosophical take on the mindset of those who chase fleeting luxury, adding, “Some people are okay with enjoying life for a few years, then whatever happens after is fine with them.”
Davido’s comments have since ignited debate online, with fans divided over his sympathetic stance toward the imprisoned fraudster. While some applauded his honesty, others questioned the ethics of publicly supporting a convicted criminal.
The interview offers a rare glimpse into the blurred lines between fame, friendship, and accountability in Nigeria’s glitzy entertainment and socialite circles—where opulence often overshadows scrutiny.
