Pressure mounts on Dutchman as United eye Simone Inzaghi as potential replacement
Manchester United head coach Erik ten Hag has been given a lifeline for the next two matches to secure his future at the club, following a crushing 3-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford. According to reports, the United hierarchy are still backing Ten Hag, but the Dutchman must deliver positive results against FC Porto and Aston Villa in the coming week to avoid potential dismissal.
Despite a shaky start to the season, the club is hesitant to make any immediate changes. However, if United fail to perform in the upcoming games, Ten Hag’s position could be at serious risk. As reported by The Guardian, the atmosphere within the club is “calm,” though it is acknowledged that this is a pivotal week for the manager.
“If United suffer defeat in one or both games, particularly in an alarming fashion, his dismissal may be considered,” the Telegraph reported, highlighting the mounting pressure on Ten Hag.
The club’s decision to retain Ten Hag after last season’s FA Cup triumph followed an internal review, during which other managerial candidates, including Thomas Tuchel and Roberto De Zerbi, were reportedly considered. United extended Ten Hag’s contract until June 2026, but their poor form this season has renewed speculation about his future.
Simone Inzaghi Eyed as Potential Replacement
Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi has emerged as a surprise candidate to replace Ten Hag, should the Dutchman be sacked.
According to The Daily Star, the Italian has caught the attention of United’s leadership after leading Inter to six trophies and a Champions League final appearance last season.
Inzaghi, known for making Inter a tough team to beat, could be encouraged to adopt a more attacking style at United, should he take the role. However, with Inzaghi recently signing a new deal with Inter, it remains uncertain whether he would be willing to take on the challenge of rebuilding United.
Arsenal and Real Madrid Target Palmeiras Defender
Meanwhile, Arsenal and Real Madrid are reportedly vying for the signature of Palmeiras centre-back Vitor Reis, an 18-year-old prospect attracting interest from top European clubs, including Chelsea and Liverpool.
The Athletic reports that both Arsenal and Madrid have approached Palmeiras about the young defender, whose contract includes a €100 million release clause.
Reis has a long-term contract with Palmeiras, and while the club hopes to keep him until after the 2025 Club World Cup, his talent has put him on the radar of several elite European teams.
